  1. Within this piece I observe a mostly black and white image, save for the figure on the right-hand side, who appears in muted shades of brown. The photo is of an airport or train station, with a wider than normal field of view, as indicated by the curved tile grid on the left. The rightmost third of the image is much lighter then the rest. There is a great deal of motion as people move to and fro.

    The theme of this piece appears to be isolation. The cardboard man, though surrounded by others, seems alone and without friends. Is he waiting for someone? Is he the only one of his kind? Perhaps his appearance reflects his inner state. He could be suffering from depression and feels isolated, despite his presence in a sea of people. The piece is open to interpretation, and invites us to ponder the meaning of loneliness in a crowded but impersonal society.

    The strongest element of this image is the integration of the cardboard man into the photo. His presence is the only noticeable manipulation, and it is very convincing.
